While 2020 has been a challenging year for our high school graduates, new resources are available to
support them through their upcoming transition.
CDAA National President Wanda Hayes joins Dave on weekend wondering explains This has been an extraordinary year for Year 12 students, with a changing landscape meaning there are
now a wider variety of pathways to jobs than ever before.
“But while it will certainly be a year to remember, now more than ever we encourage school leavers to
access the range of resources available to them.”
The Federal Government has launched the Your Career website, which includes a range of resources
focused on school leavers.
Graduates also have free access to direct support from qualified career practitioners through the School
Leavers Information Service (Call 1800 CAREER).
In the changing landscape, Ms Hayes recommends that school leavers take the time to identify the skills
they have developed so far, including technical and transferable skills.
A recent article by the World Economic Forum predicted that in the future the right skills will be prized
over academic qualifications alone.
“While identifying their current skills, school leavers should also be thinking about what skills they wish
to focus on for the future,” she said.
For graduates taking on further education or training, Ms Hayes advises them to access assistance from a
qualified career practitioner.
“They can ensure the training you take on will help you build the skills you need to succeed and that it
will be a good fit for your preferences and strengths,” she said.
School leavers also have access to free or low-fee training in areas of identified skills needs through the
new JobTrainer program.
