Tasmanian cancer survivor Sue King has been named a Global Hero of Hope by the American Cancer Society.

Dave chats with Sue about her award which comes at a special time for the  Cancer Council Tasmania with Relay For Life being conducted in six regions across Tasmania in March and April – Sue King has been involved in Relay For Life for the past 15 years.

.My Relay for Life experience began in 2003 when we participated in memory of a fellow member who had passed away due to cancer.

“I didn’t really know much about the event and I had limited exposure to cancer before this. I soon realised just how many people were affected by the disease and how this event brought the community together.”

Sue continued to participate in Relay For Life, becoming a committee member in 2007; it was in 2012 that Sue faced her own personal cancer journey.

“In 2012 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It gave me a whole different feel for the Relay. Thankfully, I was still able to participate that year.

“The compassion, friendship, support and love I received from so many people brought me to tears many times. I was experiencing the Relay through different eyes. I finally really understood what it was all about, and how all those survivors and their families felt about the Relay. I love it with a passion.”

The American Cancer Society Global Relay For Life Heroes of Hope Program profiles cancer survivors and caregivers whose work exemplifies the mission of Cancer Council and Relay For Life. The Global Heroes of Hope exhibit exemplary behavior and inspires hope, courage and determination in the fight to eliminate cancer.

Sue King will be prominent again at the North West Relay For Life on March 3-4 at the Penguin Sports complex where she will organise all the entertainment for the event.

Cancer Council Tasmania encourages people to register through www.relayforlife.org.au or call 1300 65 65 85.
