Australian College of Nurse Practitioners  President Leanne Boase joins Dave to talk about Nurse Practitioners week which will end this year on  Nurse Practitioner Day 12th December to celebrate an important milestone for the nursing profession.
This date was identified as a date of national significance, as the first Nurse Practitioners were endorsed on this day in Australia in the year 2000 – Ms Sue Denison and Ms Jane O’Connell.
Sue stated “It was a defining moment when my colleague Jane O’Connell and I were announced in Parliament as the  first two Nurse Practitioners (NP) in Australia.”
Now 20 years later, there are over 2,000+ Nurse Practitioners endorsed with the Nursing and Midwifery
Board of Australia.
Registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority, Nurse Practitioners are focused on improving access to quality health care, providing cost-effective care, and targeting at-risk populations including aged care and indigenous populations in remote and rural areas.
NP week has become so celebrated, in 2020 the ACNP will once again extend the celebrations to a full week. Nurse  Practitioner Week will commence on the 7th December and
finish on the 13th December 2020.
The theme for Nurse Practitioner Week in 2020 is “Nurse Practitioners: Writing Our Own Story. Helping You with Yours…”
The road to becoming a NP is extensive, often unique and viewed as a privilege by Nurse Practitioners. Each Nurse Practitioner has a different story, and with NP’s practising in Australia for over 20 years now, Nurse Practitioners are having to write their own stories, pave their own way, so that all patients and future generations can have access to quality health care.

In 2020, every Nurse Practitioner has their own unique story. Working across many areas of specialty, they are helping the community with their health story.
In the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife we are asking Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Practice Nurses, and members of the community to get involved in Nurse Practitioner week.

You can do this by visiting the ACNP website and downloading the campaign toolkit.
