David Wood talks with  Tasmania’s Most Inspirational Mum the  Barnardos Mother of the Year 2016 Amanda Richter.

Out of thousands of nominations across the nation, today inspirational Huon Valley mum Amanda Richter has been chosen as the Tasmania State finalist for Barnardos Mother of the Year, and will now go into the running for the national winner.

Despite being told she would never be able to have children due to a physical disability, Amanda, 29, never let the door to motherhood close on her – and is glad she didn’t listen to the naysayers.

As a girl, doctors told Amanda she would never have a husband or children due to being confined to a wheelchair, as a result of Spina Bifida. But Amanda refused to let her physical disability get in the way of her dream of raising a family.

Seven years ago, Amanda gave birth to her first child, Hailee, and is now eagerly awaiting the birth of her second child, despite the fact that her first pregnancy bore several complications.

Now, Amanda often cares for Hailee on her own, with her husband working long days an hour’s drive from home, but she has never let that hold her back from giving Hailee all the opportunities available to other kids.

Husband and nominator Steven Richter stands in awe of his wife’s determination and capability.

Now in its 21st year, Barnardos Mother of the Year is the largest and most recognised national awards celebrating mothers.

Each state finalist will go into the running to be named the overall 2016 Barnardos Mother of the Year, which will be announced on May 5th 2016.
